Meet the Band: NY Elite Interview with Cynation
NY Elite: Tell us a little about yourself as an artist.
Josh Mak: My name is Josh Mak, frontman and guitarist for the Rock band, Cynation. Our band is made up of members from Melbourne, Australia and Singapore.
Music for me has been a life long passion and together with my brothers in the band we are working at it every single day till we make it.
Josh Mak – Vocals & Guitars
Simon Lai – Guitars
Shah – Guitars
Andrew Teo – Bass
NY Elite: How did you get started and how would you describe your music?
Josh Mak: We met when we were in grade 3, way back in 1994 and have been the best of friends ever since. At the age of 12 we started learning our respective instruments and forming a band was the next natural progression.
We started doing live shows when we were 16 and continued to do that for the next 5 years.
As with many musicians life got in the way and we broke up and thought we had given up on our dream.
However, our dream was not yet done with us.
Fast forward to 2016 and we reformed with a new sound and hunger for music.
This story was not yet over.
In fact, it is only just beginning.
Our style can be described as hard rock, but we also incorporate many of our other influences such as Funk, RnB, Heavy Metal and even some Electronic music.
NY Elite: What does art mean to you?
Josh Mak: To me art can be summed up by one word. Honesty. When people hear the word honesty they normally think of it as a positive thing.
The reality however, is that honesty can often be harsh and hard to look at.
Art to me should be about depicting the truth. Be it beautiful or ugly and should strive to be as pure as possible and free of censorship.
NY Elite: What projects are you currently working on?
Josh Mak: We are currently recording our second single which will be part of a 5 track Ep.
Our debut single Dancing Devil was released last month and has been receiving great international response via social media.
NY Elite: Where was your last performance?
Josh Mak: Our last performance as a band was at Sentosa Beach in Singapore back in 2006
NY Elite: Where would you most like to perform?
Josh Mak: I think for many musicians, Madison Square Garden is a dream venue as many iconic artist have performed there.
Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas would be another one that would be a goal for us.
NY Elite: If you could try a new genre of music, what would it be?
Josh Mak: I have always been interested in Blues music and Electronic music. Who knows someday we might venture into these territories?
Although I believe some of these styles have already found their way into our sound.
NY Elite: Do you enjoy writing music and/or lyrics?
Josh Mak: I do very much enjoy writing music and lyrics.
Lyrics are especially important to me and are often very personal and revealing.
Music is like the raw sexual attraction you have when you first meet someone. Lyrics are when the sex has passed and you really get to know a person.
NY Elite: Do You Have a Formal Music Education / Training?
Josh Mak: I am mainly self taught. I learnt how to play the guitar from friends, guitar magazines and hours of trial and error.
School of any sort never seemed to agree with me. I think a formal music education can be very beneficial but it just wasn’t for me.
NY Elite: Do you play any instruments?
Josh Mak: I play electric and acoustic guitar also a little bit of piano and keyboards.
NY Elite: What hidden talents do you have?
Josh Mak: Hmmm… not many people know this but I also do a little bit of acting and my band tells me I’m a pretty decent cook.
NY Elite: Who Are Your Musical Influences?
Josh Mak: I could probably fill an entire page answering this question but if I had to give some examples of the artist who have inspired me I would have to say.
Guns n’ Roses, Skid Row, Marilyn Manson, Daft Punk, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Rammstein, Eminem, Danzig, Sixx AM, Velvet Revolver, In Flames and Slash’s Snakepit.
I am constantly changing who I listen to but these bands are a constant.
NY Elite: What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?
Josh Mak: First thing would be, to be aware of how hard and how much sacrifice it takes to be a musician. And if that doesn’t scare you away then keep working at it till it happens!
It is also important to constantly analyze your actions to see if what you are currently doing is progressing you closer to your goal.
Make sure you do at least one thing everyday that brings you closer to success.
To paraphrase Albert Einstein: “Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.”
Tell us about being on Collision Radio with Dj Cat.
Josh Mak: It was a massive honor to be interviewed by DJ Cat On Collision Radio. Previous international guest on her show have included Max Cavelera formerly of Sepultura, Dani Filth of Cradle of Filth and Bjorn Strid of Soilwork to name a few. All of whom were huge musical influences on us growing up. It really was a little surreal to be given such an opportunity and we are immensely grateful to DJ Cat for that.
We would also like to thank all the people who tuned into the show and also our Facebook and Instagram fans for tuning in to the live feed. You guys really made it extra fun and we can’t wait to do it again. We will continue to work hard to reach our goals and thanks to all the support from everyone. We are well on our way and it goes to show that if you work hard enough, dreams just might come true.
NY Elite: What can we expect from you in 2017?
Josh Mak: 2017 has seen us release our debut single, Dancing Devil. We are working on the follow up to that entitled Go Louie Go which is estimated to be released end of September.
Both of these tracks will be part of a 5 track Ep estimated for a December release.
